Oqaatsut Day by Kayak

Boat to Oqaatsut and Kayak Adventure

Experience an authentic small settlement in the incredible Greenlandic nature. Taste the local cuisine, learn about the Inuit culture and kajak between icebergs.

Oqaatsut is a beautiful small settlement 20 kilometers north of Ilulissat. The place is also known as Rodebay, as it used to be a well known trading post for Dutch whalers in the 18th century. Today it’s rare to hunt whales in the area, but you can still see the remains of the settlement’s past glory all over Oqaatsut. You feel the extraordinary history of this isolated gem, as you walk between the old colourful houses and stand on the massive rocks, where the whales used to be dragged onto.

We start of the day by getting into our kayak gear, before we get picked up by boat. On the way to the settlement, we will pass the massive icebergs and enjoy the stunning coastline. As we arrive, you will learn the basics of kayaking and enjoy two hours of paddling as we explore the icebergs and the small caves in the area by kajak. If we are lucky, we might even spot a whale or two.

Discover the Settlement

After the kayak tour, we will dress into our regular clothes and enjoy a traditional Greenlandic lunch. Our experienced guide will tell you about the life in Oqaatsut and explain the history and culture of the area. After lunch we will go for a small walk around the settlement and experience how it is to live in an isolated Greenlandic settlement with only 25 inhabitants. At the end of the day, we will return to Ilulissat by boat.

Thanks to our certified kayak-guides, modern equipment and safety protocols, we make it possible for you to kayak in this incredible landscape, even if you have never been kayaking before. We take pride in providing a safe and comfortable experience for everybody.

During the tour, your guide will take photos of you, while you paddle in this incredible scenery. The photos are included in the price and will be ready for download shortly after the tour.
