Our adventure begins at the old heliport, where we’ll quickly enter the UNESCO-protected area* along a picturesque wooden path. As we continue, we’ll make our way to the famous ruins of Sermermiut.
For over 4,000 years, various Inuit groups settled in the Sermermiut area. Known for its abundant wildlife and sheltered by towering hills, this location offered the perfect refuge in Greenland’s harsh and unforgiving nature.
Along the way, we’ll pass the stone ruins of ancient turf houses, which are located on the top of the small hills with sweeping views of the icefjord. At its peak, over 250 Inuit people lived in Sermermiut, and the last inhabitants left the settlement around 1850.
As we hike a little further, we’ll reach Nakkaavik, the final stop on our tour. From here, you’ll be treated to a truly awe-inspiring view of the Kangia, the Ilulissat Icefjord, with its majestic icebergs towering in the distance. This spot is also known for its tragic history, which your guide will share with you. We’ll take a break here, where your guide will serve hot coffee and tea, allowing you to relax and soak in the stunning surroundings.
Afterward, we’ll retrace our steps along the same wooden path back.
Join us on this beautiful and relatively easy hike, where you’ll not only experience the breathtaking nature of Sermermiut but also uncover the fascinating history of this remarkable place.
