Qasigiannguit daytrip

We begin our journey by sailing from Ilulissat through the Ilulissat Icefjord, one of Greenland’s most iconic natural wonders. As we pass between enormous icebergs slowly making their way towards the open sea, we can enjoy the unique scenery of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. With a bit of luck, we may even spot whales in the waters along the way, adding an extra touch to the journey towards Qasigiannguit.

Located on the shores of Disko Bay, Qasigiannguit is one of Greenland’s oldest settlements, founded in 1734. Surrounded by mountains, lakes, and wide-open landscapes, the town offers a glimpse into a way of life closely connected to nature. Qasigiannguit has a strong connection to hunting and fishing traditions, which have shaped the community for generations.

Upon arrival, we head into the backcountry surrounding Qasigiannguit. The hike takes us across the open tundra towards Tasersuaq Lake, with views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The area is home to musk oxen, and with binoculars in hand, we will scan the landscape in the hope of spotting these impressive animals in the distance. Along the way, we will enjoy a lunch prepared with fresh Greenlandic ingredients before continuing our hike back towards Qasigiannguit.

As we return to Qasigiannguit after our hike, the day continues with a visit to the local museum. Here, exhibitions offer a fascinating insight into the town’s history, highlighting archaeological discoveries and Inuit culture that have shaped the area for thousands of years. The museum provides an opportunity to learn more about the people who have lived in this region and their close relationship with the surrounding landscape.

After a day of exploring the nature and history of Qasigiannguit, we enjoy a relaxing boat ride back across Disko Bay, taking in the beautiful surroundings one last time before returning to Ilulissat.
