Money & Local Currency
As a territory in the Kingdom of Denmark, the currency of Greenland is the Danish Krone (DKK). We recommend exchanging your currency for Danish Kroner prior to your travel. Most major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and some local establishments, but it is a good idea to bring a small amount of Danish kroner as well.
Vaccination & Immunizations
At the time of publication, no vaccinations or immunizations are required for travel to the Arctic region. However, we strongly recommend that you are up-to-date on routine vaccinations when planning any type of travel. Ideally 4-6 weeks before departure, speak with your doctor about vaccinations, immunizations and medicines that you may need.
Passport & Visa Requirements
As Greenland is part of the Danish community, entry requirements for Greenland are the same as if you were travelling to Denmark. Remember to bring your passport, as well as all documentation travel documentation. Upon entry and exit, you may be required to provide proof of identity and present a return ticket. Consult your embassy for information specific to your nationality and the current requirements.
Clothing & weather
Temperatures in Greenland vary greatly throughout the year. Typically, the first frost arrives in September and lasts until May. During this period, temperatures can range from around 0°C to as low as -30°C, with the coldest months being January through March.
From May to August, temperatures are milder, generally ranging from 0°C to around 20°C, with averages around 10–13°C.
No matter when you visit Greenland, we recommend dressing in layers. Start with wool as your base layer, add a down jacket or vest for insulation, and top it with a wind- and waterproof jacket. The chill factor is more noticeable on the water during boat excursions, even in summer, and when sitting or standing still—such as on a dogsled tour.
Always bring a warm hat, gloves, scarf, and buff, as well as sunscreen and sunglasses. This is important even in winter, when the sun reflects off the snow and ice.
Rescheduling of activities
The weather conditions in Greenland can be harsh and unpredictable. Therefore, all travelers to Greenland must be prepared that things can change: excursions can be cancelled or postponed, flights can get delayed. Everyone working in Greenland are used to handling this, and we are experts in having a plan B, C, and D. But we ask all visitors to come here with a bit of patience - none of us can control the weather. That is part of exploring a land like Greenland.
We recommond you bring:
- Clothing so you can dress in layers
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Mosquito repellant (summer)
- Camera
- Adapter (European outlets)
- Hiking poles and/or spikes for your shoes (winter)
