Located just 20 kilometers north of Ilulissat, Oqaatsut is a small settlement with around 40 inhabitants. Life here revolves mainly around fishing, but also the everyday life in the settlement such as the public school, the grocery store, and post office.
Located by the water is our belowed Restaurant H8 Explorer. The restaurant is housed in historic buildings that once formed part of the Royal Greenland Trading Department in the late 1800s. For the past 25 years, these charming buildings have been home to a cozy restaurant where both locals and visitors from around the world come to enjoy delicious meals made from local ingredients — all while taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Getting to Oqaatsut depends on the season, and each mode of transport adds to the adventure.
In winter, the bay around the village freezes over, and locals travel by dog sled or snowmobile across the frozen sea and into the backcountry — all the way to Ilulissat.
In summer, you can hike the beautiful coastal trail between Ilulissat and Oqaatsut. The route winds past lakes, small streams, and dramatic mountain backdrops, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
Most of the year, you can also reach Oqaatsut by boat. However, if the Disko Bay freezes in winter, the sea route is closed — and that’s your chance to travel the traditional way, by dog sled or snowmobile.
